HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography)

A HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography) Scan is a test which uses ultrasound to check whether the fallopian tubes are open (i.e. patent). It is also called a 'Tubal Patency Test'. A small tube is passed through the cervix and into the uterus to release contrast dye through each fallopian tube. A trans-vaginal ultrasound probe monitors the progress of the dye through the fallopian tubes to determine whether adhesions, blockages or other abnormalities are present. Such damage to a fallopian tube would prevent an egg from reaching the uterine cavity or sperm reaching the egg after ovulation.

HyCoSy takes approximately 30 minutes. The procedure can be done without anaesthetic but the patient may feel some pain and discomfort when the dye passes through the fallopian tube.
